Five Tips for Choosing the Right Fan

Find your Perfect Fan Today

Looking to buy a fan but unsure of the differences between fan types and what would be best suited to your space? Follow these 5 simple tips to selecting the perfect fan for your home today. From determining the size of your space, the location and style, this simple guide will help you understand which ceiling fans are best to beat the heat this Summer.

1. Choose between a ceiling fan or portable fan

Before you can determine which ceiling fans are the best, you must decide whether or not you want a ceiling fan or a portable fan. While this may seem like an obvious decision, it can take some time to decide which is best for you. For small rooms, both options offer a suitable amount of cooling. For larger spaces, a ceiling fan will provide greater circulation of air throughout a space, however, will not be as direct as what a portable fan could be. Another thing to consider is whether or not you would like the additional lighting available with many different ceiling fans. This is an additional benefit to ceiling fans compared to portable fans.

Also consider the size of your room. While a portable fan will cool down small spaces, they will also take up a considerable amount of space, while a ceiling fan is unobtrusive and can sit flush to your ceiling. Now you might be wondering, are ceiling fans expensive to run? Luckily, a new ceiling fan is quite economic to operate - especially if you opt for a DC Fan. A DC fan refers to the type of motor used to operate your fan, and will often be labelled on your fan as either this or AC.

2. Choose the right size fan for your space

Before you go out and order any random fan, there are a few key considerations to be made. Firstly, you will need to determine the size of your room/space you are wishing to cool, and then determine the size of fan you will need. Now you may be wondering how ceiling fans are measured. Simply enough, ceiling fans are either measured in inches or centimetres.

There are a few specifications to take note of when determining the best size fan for your space. Consider the width, which will be the longest measurement of your fan, from one blade tip to the other. Then, consider the fan’s drop, which will be from the base of your fan to the roof. This can be altered to suit your needs by purchasing a compatible extension pole. The final measurement is the canopy. This measurement considers the covering found at the point in which the rod meets the roof. This measurement is less important to note when determining what size fan will best suit your area.

3. Measure the height of your ceiling

Once you have your fan measurements, measure the length, width and height of your room/space. If the height of your room is lower than the standard height of 2.4m, then we would recommend choosing one of our low profile fans. This style of fan has a shorter drop, and blades that sit more flush against the ceiling. This ensures that your fan can operate safely while still providing ample cooling. To determine which fan is best for your space, check out our handy size guide below which will indicate the best size fan for your space.

4. Choose the right style fan for your home

5. Get your fan installed by a professional

Now that you’ve found the perfect style, colour and size of fan, it’s time to install! At this point, you will need to enlist the help of an electrician to get this job done. However, you can assist in this process by determining the position in which you would like your ceiling fan to sit. In most cases, we would recommend the centre of your room. Although, there are some instances where you might prefer to centre your fan over another central point in your room such as a bed or sitting area.

A few considerations to keep in mind when determining the placement of your fan include any protruding objects such as tall furniture, pendant lights or cornices. Once you are happy with your placement, organise your electrician to come and install your new fan!
